Applying for New Driving License in State of New York: State of New York doesn’t allow you to drive a vehicle until you are at least 16 years old. New York State issues variety of licenses depending upon different factors.

• Class A, B and C are commercial licenses; those are issued to the drivers of commercial vehicles. Class A is issued to the drivers who are at least 21 years old, while Class B and C are issued to the drivers of minimum age 18 years. The procedure to acquire commercial license differs from the procedure of acquiring regular license.
• Class D license is a standard non commercial regular license. It is issued to the drivers of minimum age 18 or if you are 17 years old but have an MV-285 certificate.
• Class DJ is a junior license. It is issued to the drivers younger than 18 years of age. It is a restricted version of the Class D license.
• Class E license is same as Class D license but you can drive some additional vehicles such as taxi and livery.
• Class M is issued to the drivers of motorcycles.
• Class MJ is the restricted version of Class M license, which is issued to the drivers under 18 years old.

You need to be at least 16 years old to acquire learner’s permit from New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You also need to provide proof of identity and Social Security card. You must clear a vision test. If you don’t have MV-285 certificate, then you should even clear the written test. Fill the MV-44 Form and pay the fees.

Once you acquire learner’s permit, you should complete driver education course before appearing for road test. A licensed driver of minimum age 21 years should accompany you while you practice driving. If you are under 18, then additional restrictions are applied. If you are under 18, then your parent must fill the MV-262 form. As you pass the road test, you are issued a 90 days interim license. Your photo license is mailed to you within four weeks. All the drivers are under probation period of six months after clearing road test.

As soon as you turn 18 years old, your junior license automatically converts to senior license. You receive your senior license by mail from DMV. If you complete the driver education course and you are 17 years old, then you can apply for senior license.

Renewing Driving License in State of New York: The validity period of your license can be four to five years depending upon the type of license. Your license expires on your birthday.
